The motorized wheelchair is great. I think so too. But it’s not as simple as buying a power chair. And it’s not as simple as just buying a manual. It’s harder than it sounds. I’m not talking about going to the store and buying a manual. I’m not even talking about going to an independent dealer to buy a manual. If you have the time and money to do that, you can make your own.
This is something most of us can do. My point is that if you’re reading this and you’re in the market for a new powerchair, you can actually make your own. It is possible, and it is fun. But it’s also a lot of work. The amount of time it takes to make your own is greater if you’re DIYing your own powerchair than if you’re shopping for one off the shelf.
I know this has been a big question, but you can’t just go and buy a new one. Your powerchair will have to be custom built to meet the needs of your lifestyle. The only way to really know what’s necessary is to go to an independent dealer and ask for a proposal and then make your own.
The very best powerchairs are custom made. An average one is going to cost anywhere from $3000 to $6000. The average dealer is going to charge anywhere from $1000 to $2000. And yes, the dealer does charge a fee for the work done, but these fees are usually much less than the cost of the custom-built powerchair.
Customizing a powerchair is simple. Just get the right wheels, a seat, and a drivetrain. There is no need for any additional parts like wiring or adjustments. In fact, there are many more parts that can be added. And if you are a little careful, you can even add a few extras.
The powerchair is one of those things that a lot of people tend to forget that you can do. Sure, you can DIY it yourself, but it is much easier to just buy one. If you do, you are going to pay a lot more than it is worth. Many people are willing to pay a fair amount of money for a powerchair on the Internet, but when it comes down to it, they will often pay too much.
I had a great deal of fun building my own powerchair, but it’s still not cheap. And while you can save a lot of money by using a powerchair that was made by somebody else – and the way some people are willing to pay for it is far less than it would be for your own custom build – you will usually end up paying far more for a powerchair than it’s worth.
So, what makes a powerchair worth spending a lot of money on? You might be thinking that it has to be made of some special material that has durability or a certain weight, like some sort of special wood, aluminum, or carbon fiber. But what about the powerchair itself? Does it need to be made of something durable and weighty? Of course not, it can be made of cheap materials, but the durability and weight of that material is not the point.
